  4. in Windows, then you must first install the Video for Windows runtime player
  5. for the movies to work.  Go to the Windows Program Manager and select FILE,

  7. CD-ROM drive).  Even if you have already loaded a version of Video for

  39. Every attempt has been made to provide Multimedia PC-compatible content,
  40. both in images (BMP format) and sound (WAV format).  A Windows
  41. navigational program can be found in the root directory of the disc.
  42. You may install part or all of the software (with the exception of the
  43. photos and music) to the hard drive by using the SETUP.EXE program. To do
  44. so, choose RUN from the FILE menu of the Windows Program Manager and type
  45. D:\SETUP, where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.  Installing
  46. everything to the hard disk provides much better performance, however, it
  47. adds about 1.5 MB of files to your hard drive.  Buttons in the Windows
  48. program may be used with a mouse or with the TAB and ENTER keys. The
  49. TAB key moves from button to button, and the ENTER key selects.
  50. Standard Windows help is available--just press the button labeled
  51. "?" on the "Control Panel" (button bar) in the program.
  52.  
  53. Keep in mind the following requirements:
  54.  
  55. 1.  You must have Windows version 3.1 or later to use our navigational
  56. program. We have discontinued distributing our MS-DOS non-Windows version,
  57. though you can still use the image files on the CD in a DOS application if
  58. you have a program that can display them.
  59.  
  60. 2.  You must have an MPC-compatible sound card to hear the music. Boards
  61. from Creative Labs (the SoundBlaster Pro), Media Vision (Pro Audio 
  62. Spectrum), and many other vendors have been tested for compatibility with
  63. this product.
  64.  
  65. 3.  Still pictures were meant to be displayed with a 256, 32K, 64K,
  66. or 16M color 640 x 480 Windows driver. Such drivers are available 
  67. direct from your video board's manufacturer. Drivers for many 
  68. brands are also included in Aris's "MPC Wizard."  You must have 
  69. at least 512K of video RAM. Use Windows Setup to change your 
  70. driver.

  72. 4. In order to view the MPEG versions of the movies in Windows, your system
  73. must have the necessary hardware and software. If your system lacks this
  74. hardware, you should still be able to play the movies in the Video for
  75. Windows (SuperMatch Cinepak) format.
  76.  
  77. 5. Video for Windows playback requires installation of the Video for Windows
  78. runtime drivers. These can be found in the VFWSETUP directory.  Just go to
  79. the File Manager of Windows, then launch the SETUP.EXE program in the
  80. VFWSETUP directory.  
  81.  
  82. 6.  If the sound breaks up, try to increase the buffering done by Windows.
  83. To do this, go to the Main Window, select Control Panel, then select 
  84. Drivers.  Double click on the MCI Sound selection and move the slider to
  85. 9 seconds of buffering.  If this doesn't entirely solve the problem,
  86. you may need to increase the memory buffering in the MSCDEX statement in
  87. your AUTOEXEC.BAT (the /m: command).  Try increasing it to 16 or 20.

  89. 7.  Movie performance varies, based on the caliber of your installed 
  90. hardware.  Best performance is obtained from MPC-compatible CD-ROM drives,
  91. which are capable of transfering data at 150KB per second or greater.  
  92. You can test the performance of your drive with the MPC Wizard(tm).

  95. The disc you have in your CD-ROM drive contains two complete
  96. versions of Americana (tm), one for Macintosh, the other for the
  97. Windows PC.  Your CD-ROM driver is smart enough to figure out which one
  98. you view, so sit back and enjoy.

  100. Audio is stored in the WAVE directory in Microsoft's WAV format.
  101. Audio files have been tested with MPC-compatible sound boards and
  102. are of a high-enough quality for multimedia presentations (22 Khz, mono).
  103. You must have an MPC compatible sound board with a speaker or headphones
  104. to hear the WAV files.  The MediaVision ProAudio Spectrum and the Sound
  105. Blaster Professional sound boards were used in the development of this
  106. product. They are both easy to install and work well.

  112. When you first enter the program you are asked whether you accept
  113. limited-use rights to the images, sounds, and videos supplied on
  114. the Americana disc.  Limited use rights are as follows:

  117.      * Reuse Guidelines: MediaClips can be reproduced royalty
  118.        free in print and digital publications, except that
  119.        resale in the form of clip art collections or as clip
  120.        art is not permitted. Reproduction for broadcast, satellite

  122.        notice of any commercial reproduction(s) and submit two sample
  123.        copies to Aris Multimedia Entertainment, Inc. Users must not
  124.        reproduce more than 20% of the individual pictures, sounds or

  152. There are 100 high quality images and 100 sound tracks stored on
  153. this disc.  Images are stored in several formats for your
  154. convenience:

  156. 1.  24-bit TIF, in 640 x 480 format, for high resolution paint 
  157. programs and desktop publishing, in the TIFF directory. Users with 
  158. Hi-Color or True-Color cards may view these images with programs 
  159. capable of 24-bit image display.
  160.  
  161. 2.  8-bit BMP, 640 x 480 format, in the BMPLARGE directory.
  162.  
  163. 3.  8-bit BMP, 320 x 240 format, for high speed viewing, in the 
  164. BMPSMALL directory.

  166. We have also included an excellent file conversion shareware program called
  167. IMAGE ALCHEMY in case you need to use one of our images in a format we
  168. have not provided. You may use the IMAGE ALCHEMY shareware program for
  169. two weeks without registering the software and paying the fee.  Please
  170. note, this program works well on all 640 x 480 or smaller
  171. images.  It offers many fine capabilities, such as
  172. conversion between many different formats, including Mac and PC,
  173. and it should find a home in your imaging utilities directories.
  174. The registered version will handle images larger than 640 x 480.
